In order to adopt a retired racing greyhound, please complete the following steps:

  1. Please read the WCGA Owner’s Guide. We recommend that you read Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies (by Lee Livingood) or Adopting the Racing Greyhound (by Cynthia Brannigan), and if you have children, Childproofing your Dog (by Brian Kilcommons). Please visit our Greyhound Education page for a more thorough recommended reading list.

  2. Once you've read the WCGA Owner's Guide, please complete an Adoption Application. You can fill out the application online and submit it immediately. You can also download, print, fill out the application and mail it in to us. This detailed questionnaire gives the adoption coordinator a complete picture of your lifestyle and accommodations for the dog.

  3. After you’ve submitted your application, an adoption representative will call to talk with you about having a greyhound in your home. They will also schedule a home visit. The purpose of the home visit is to ensure the dog's new environment will be safe and secure, and to acquaint you with having a greyhound in your home. We will also answer any questions that you have at this time.

  4. Once the home visit has been completed, we will do our best to place a greyhound in your home that suits your lifestyle. The adoption staff is always available to answer questions and help you during the transition period. However, most greyhounds take to home life very quickly and are easy to live with.
